Looking for a challenge that could earn you some great prizes?

Why not enter one of the many science-related competitions available to you as an Australian student. Below is a list of the science competitions that are currently available.

Entering competitions is a great way to test your knowledge and get involved in the scientific community.

Nominations for the 2010 ResourceSmart Schools Awards and registration for the 2010 Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge are now open.

The Awards and Challenge recognise and reward Victorian schools, students and teachers for their initiatives and achievements in resource management; biodiversity, energy, waste, water and community and partnerships. Community and Partnerships Smart is a new category introduced this year to reward schools for their community and partnership engagement.

Entering the 2010 ResourceSmart Schools Awards and the 2010 Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge schools have a chance to win cash and prizes of over $50,000 to assist in developing initiatives and projects in their sustainability journey.

Winners and finalists have the opportunity to attend and present at the ResourceSmart Schools Awards ceremony in October 2010.

2010 International Science Poetry Competition

The 2010 International Science Poetry Competition is now open and calling for submissions. The competition will be split into three age group sections: 9-11, 12-14 and 15+. The closing date is 30 June 2010. For more information check out http://www.scienceeducationreview.com/poetcomp.html


Call for Entries - SCINEMA 2010

SCINEMA Festival of Science Film is pleased to announce a CALL FOR ENTRIES for the 2010 Festival.

SCINEMA is Australia's only science film festival, bringing a program of science drama, documentaries, and short subjects, as well as a number of guest speakers, to venues across Australia from Cairns to Hobart, and Sydney to Perth. In 2009, SCINEMA played to an audience of 15,000 across 200 venues in Australia and New Zealand.

Winners of our 2009 Festival included Vanessa Gould's beautiful Between The Folds and, for the second year running, Victorian school student Kristian Lang, who took the top award for our student short film competition.

2010 Student Biodiversity Short Film Challenge

To celebrate 2010 being the International Year of Biodiversity, SCINEMA is holding a competitive student film competition for Australian school students. We challenge you to make a short film, under 5 minutes, with a space or biodiversity or environment theme. Films will be judged according to age groups (Primary School, Secondary School, Tertiary Institutions) and further prizes will be awarded for humour, technical merit, and the ability to explain complex concepts. SCINEMA at the World Congress of Science and Factual Producers

SCINEMA welcomes filmmakers from across the globe to Melbourne this December for the 2009 World Congress of Science and Factual Producers. Rio Tinto Big Science Competition

This competition gives you the opportunity to discover your science talent whilst stretching your thinking skills. How good are you at problem solving? This is an international competition open to students in school years 7 -12. In 2008 year more than 38 000 students took part. Why don't you give it a try?

Everyone gets a certificate to recognise their efforts. Top students are invited to attend an award ceremony with a workshop run by a science personality.

The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition is held in the third week of May each year.



Science Olympiads

The Australian Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads allow students to become more involved in Science. Students gain valuable experience by working with other students and teachers who are passionate about Science. Students can launch themselves into the International Science Olympiads by becoming involved with the ASO program.for more information check out http://www.asi.edu.au/olympiads/


Science Talent Search

The Science Talent Search (STS) is an annual, science based competition open to all primary and secondary students in Victoria, Australia. Science Talent Search fits closely with the VELS philosophy of teaching and learning. There is a close match between many STS sections and VELS strands, domains and dimensions. The STS theme for 2010 is Australian Biodiversity.
